Refugees from Sea Level rise.

A recent map from NASA shows in startling clarity how a one meter rise in sea levels will displace millions of people in highly populated countries in the West Pacific.

It seems ironic that Australia, which
is  very sensitive to refugees, is a major coal producer and therefore is one of the countries most responsible for producing greenhouse gasses  that cause rising sea levels.
Australia will probably be a destination of safety for millions of desperate people seeking food and shelter for their families.

Another interesting post that reminds of the Pacific Island nation's plight. Certainly our children of today will be seeing the increased results of the polar melts, which is dramatically gaining momentum according to latest news from NASA, NOAA and the respected Universities.

New Zealand local authorities bear a great responsibility to plan and protect our communities, and hopefully they will be supported and backed up by our central government.

I am pleased to see that Hamilton have got reducing emissions on their agenda: Quote

“As a trial, two bicycles were added to the fleet pool to enable Council to reduce vehicle usage for short trips and to lead by example. To be useful for business meeting, these bikes were equipped with carry parcels to hold materials such as documents for meetings. The bikes were given fleet vehicle numbers and are able to be booked using outlook, in the same way that cars are booked. A set of Hamilton City Council helmets has also been made available.”

I hope the public officials are utilizing the two bicycles and who knows they may also consider EV's (fueled from renewable sources such as our Geothermal stations or use of our persistent trade winds and turbines.

Hi Bob. My blog on the West Pacific people was a dig at Australia but we in NZ have a lot of island protectorates. In our protecting capacity will most probably have to accommodate them when their land floods. Fortunately they are not nations with big populations.
Your link with Hamilton council made me think about how we might convert our transport to renewable electricity.

We have a big problem with our methane emissions from cattle in New Zealand as it makes up 50% of our greenhouse gases . Florida is still going under water but by mid to end century.

Climate refugees?
Would they be just like the 50 million climate refugees that failed to appear in 2010? The UN promised us they would be roaming the earth because of catastrophic global warming, but the UN got it hopelessly wrong and not a single on of those refugees has made an appearance. Whoops!
